Portland architects Giulietti/Schouten focus on custom, single-family homes—both new builds and remodels—throughout the Pacific Northwest. Their regional expertise drew Mary and Phil Krueger to approach the firm with an ambitious project: replacing their 1938 property in Lincoln City with a modern home. They wanted their home to take advantage of the stunning Oregon Coast views and have design features like wide door frames that would allow them to age in place through retirement and into their golden years.
A sliding door was the easy choice for the upstairs master bedroom. Not only did it fit the overall aesthetic of the home, it checked the boxes of ease of use and compatibility with oversized doors. With guidance from the Krueger’s, Giulietti picked the Baldur sliding door hardware system for its iconic design and 400lb door panel weight limit.
“The clients were very excited about the whole design process of their home and really loved getting into the details—of every little piece,” said Dave Giulietti, Founder and Principal Architect at Giuletti/Schouten AIA Architects.
STYLE AND ACCESSIBILITY
Giuletti/Schouten created a warm, open space with oversized windows that offer panoramic views of the ocean. Routinely, the Kruegers catch glimpses of whales, sea lions, and birds. The master bedroom sliding door fits perfectly within the open, modern flow of the upstairs. The oversized door with the Baldur sliding door hardware system adds to the experience by creating a flexible space that can be just as easily closed off for privacy, as opened up to create a bigger room.
“We wanted to create a door that was a piece of art for the space and to have the ability to really open up the spaces to each other,” Giulietti said.
They reached out to Portland cabinetmaker L&Z Specialties to make an oversized, custom 4 ½’ wide door panel to divide the master bedroom from the rest of the second floor. For a complementing look, the Baldur sliding door hardware system was the best choice.
“The main reason, honestly, was the look, the aesthetics of the hardware,” Giulietti said. “The clients had an amazing eye for detail and immediately were drawn to the Baldur system. And they are extremely happy with the end result. It allowed us to create the function and the feel for the spaces that they were striving for.”
