When Skin by Lovely, Oregon’s leading provider of medical aesthetics, moved into the Northrup Medical Building to accommodate an increasing number of patients and staff, they enlisted JHL Design. The mission was to renovate the new space with an emphasis on environmental sustainability and an eye toward privacy and natural light.
“We worked closely with our builders and designers to make sure the office would reduce our carbon footprint, while also providing a calm and nurturing environment our patients have come to expect,” said Jake Laban, the general manager of Skin by Lovely.
Holly Freres, owner of JHL Design, quickly decided that the best door solution to efficiently use space, provide privacy to patients, and create the desired atmosphere, was sliding doors. After surveying the wide variety hardware on the market, she picked the Ragnar sliding door hardware system in Brushed Stainless.
“Skin by Lovely needed a clean, modern aesthetic that was simple,” Freres said. “Krownlab embodies all of these elements and is perfectly engineered to run smoothly and quietly. It was a seamless fit.”
The Northrup Medical building offered unique design challenges for Freres and her crew. Laid out almost in the fashion of a railroad apartment, space was at a premium. Every square foot needed to be used smartly.
“The space had a unique footprint which was rather narrow,” Freres said. “We wanted to bring more natural light into the space since that's so important to their practice and their staff. The sliding door system with glass allowed us more space for seeing patients and gave us the visual aesthetics we needed.”
The Ragnar sliding door hardware system in Brushed Stainless finish is beautiful in contrast with the clouded glass panels that lead to five exam rooms on either side of the hallway. And because Krownlab’s system was designed with glass in mind, the panels practically kiss the wall, ensuring that not an inch of space was wasted. This gives the hallway a little room to breath and saves the exam rooms from feeling cramped as the doors are opened and closed.
Ragnar’s sliding door hardware system has been tested through a million plus open and close cycles, the equivalent of 80 years of extremely high use. Broken down, this means each door being opened and closed 48 times every single workday. In part because of this exacting testing standard, all Krownlab products bear an industry-leading 10-year warranty.
Lasting quality was a big consideration for a busy clinic environment like Skin by Lovely. Their doors are opened and closed constantly, all day long, as patients cycle in and out. JHL Design and Skin By Lovely wanted to make sure that their hardware wouldn’t have to be replaced a few years down the line.
“They absolutely love it,” Freres said. “Although it was a financial investment, we know that this space will look good for decades to come. The clients were willing to invest in the Krownlab system because it's timeless, so practical, and will be able to handle the high-use of their busy practice.”
