Integral to Studio Durham’s working model is tight collaboration with clients. Sometimes, this means perfecting a home over multiple years. For these Scarsdale, NY clients, the finishing work on a multi year renovation project culminated in a renovation of an existing, unfinished basement.
“The client wanted to complete their house by redesigning a previously unfinished basement into a family room, game area, wine cellar, exercise room, and related storage,” said Philip Durham, owner of Studio Durham.
Due to space constraints, Durham and his team quickly landed sliding door hardware systems as the perfect solution.
“The barn doors solved multiple problems where the existing configuration of the building structure did not allow for typical swing doors.”
After surveying the field of sliding door hardware options, Durham chose Krownlab’s Oden sliding door hardware system because it would fit in with the rest of the home.
“The Krownlab Oden series was the best solution because the quality of the product design and finished hardware matched the quality of the other construction in the project,” Durham said.
One of the tradeoffs in turning a basement into a living space is the loss of storage. Durham and his team came up with an innovative solution—create a long, shallow storage space that didn’t encroach too far into the larger rooms. To eliminate the wasted space of a corridor, Studio Durham had an oversized, custom 7' X 12.5' door panel of recycled wood fabricated.
“All of Krownlab’s products are excellent and extremely well built,” Durham said. “Often, when we try and push the envelope of what a barn door can do in a project, Krownlab is the only product that can work in that situation.”
And, the modern, iconic design of the Oden sliding door hardware system in Brushed Stainless, provided a nice contrast to the doors.
“The clients love the design solution of contrasting the rustic recycled wood against the sleek stainless steel profiles of Oden,” Durham said.
