Variis Door
- OVERVIEW
The Variis Door™ collection is the result of a close collaboration between Krownlab and local furniture maker The Joinery. The door design is available in three species: Blue Pine, Ash, and Douglas Fir. Blue Pine is actually several species of pine affected by the natural process of beetle infestation and post-fire decay. The dramatic blue stain comes from the spread of fungus through the wood after the tree dies. Choose Douglas Fir for a more traditional approach, or distinctive Ash for a modern aesthetic.
Four standard finishes are offered: Hand Rubbed Oil, Clear Coat, Cotton and Charcoal. All finishes are 0% VOC and are selected for both beauty and durability. Please contact us to explore custom options.
Contractors and installers love that The Variis Door™ can be ordered with prep for any Krownlab sliding door hardware system. Pre-drilled pilot holes for Face Mount trolleys, or routered landing pads for Top Mount trolleys, make for a fast and accurate installation every time. The Variis Door™ can also be prepped for our door guide.

Every Variis Door is manufactured to exacting environmental and sustainability standards. All material is harvested in a selective, sensitive manner that promotes forest regeneration. The Joinery partners with local businesses, such as Sustainable Northwest Wood, to source FSC Certificed material. The Douglas Fir and Blue Pine used in this door design are thoughtfully harvested in the Pacific Northwest and reflect the beauty of this region.
Our standard finishes are 100% sustainable, petroleum-free, and contain no heavy metal compounds. With a 0% VOC rating, you can be sure that harmful vapors will not be entering your home. The Variis Door™ panels are safe for children, pets, and our planet.
Perhaps the most traditional choice within the Variis Door Collection, Douglas Fir was chosen for its lighter warm tones. As the official Oregon state tree, Fir is a resource true to our Pacific Northwest roots. All the material we use in the Douglas Fir door is harvested in a selective, sensitive manner that helps regenerate forest health. We partner with local businesses, such as Sustainable Northwest Wood, to source only FSC Certified material.
Select from three distinctive finishes for a custom fit to your space. After considering a range of finishes, we decided on Handrubbed Oil, Cotton and Charcoal for their distinctive look and how they reveal the natural beauty of the wood. We think you will agree.
Our standard finishes are 100% sustainable, petroleum-free, and contain no heavy metal compounds. With a 0% VOC rating, you can be sure that harmful vapors will not affect you and your loved ones.
Our Hand-Rubbed Oil finish not only protects the wood, it deepens its natural color. The finish we use is 100% sustainable, petroleum-free, and contains no heavy metal compounds. With a 0% VOC, you can be sure that harmful vapors will not affect you and your loved ones.
The lightest of our finishes, Cotton reveals the subtlety of grain patterns and sometimes a slightly rosy hue. Use this finish to create contrast with darker surfaces, or to bring brightness into a space where it's needed.
Like all finishes within the Variis Door Collection, no toxic chemicals are used. Instead, organic pigments, plant oils and natural waxes are used to achieve a durable, beautiful surface.
Our Charcoal finish is the most sophisticated of the collection. This stain reduces the natural variations within the wood, but grain patterns are still present and give the door texture.

The focus of our Variis Door collection—showcasing the natural variation and beauty of distinctive wood species—is best captured in Blue Pine. Across the vertical slats, color tone ranges from light yellow to deep purple, and the markings of the beetle infestation are apparent, with irregularities adding to the character of the panel. We are happy to accommodate requests for certain characteristics, to the extent possible using material on hand.
Blue pine can be any species of pine tree that acquires a natural blue stain after being infected by the Mountain Pine Beetle or during the initial decay process following a fire. Sustainable Northwest Wood, our supplier of this unique material, calls this Campground Blue Pine. Much of the original supply was sourced from public parks and campgrounds, where the dead standing trees posed a risk to human users and were carefully removed and turned into beautiful, useful wood products.

When finished with Cotton, our Blue Pine door still shows the markings of the beetle infestation, adding character and contrast.

Ash plays and important role in the history of American furniture making. Native to eastern and central North America, this wood has a gorgeous blond tone and a tight grain pattern. Aside from it's beauty, the density of Ash makes it a great choice for furniture. The Ash we use for the Variis Door panels comes from the Tennessee and Indiana region.
American Ash accepts stains like few other wood species. With a tight and consistent grain pattern, both light and dark finishes display well.
