Developing a design culture that focuses on the entirety of a project from concept development to occupancy is an evolution. New generations move through the ranks, instilled with the fundamentals of the field while bringing forward new ideas. At the University of Kansas School of Architecture, Design, and Planning they've developed Studio 804, a non-profit program dedicated to giving last-year Masters students a hands-on experience with each stage of the design process. The students draft the drawings, procure the supplies, and pound the nails; completing one building per year. Impressive stuff all on its own, but on top of that, seven of Studio 804's projects have been LEED Platinum Certified. Needless to say, when Studio 804 first contacted Krownlab in 2013 for a sliding barn door hardware contribution we were thrilled.
“We’re continually inspired by the incredible work accomplished by the students and professors at Studio 804, and by the University of Kansas School of Architecture, Design and Planning for fostering such an engaging, hands-on architectural program,” said Alyssa Hursh, Operations Manager for Krownlab.
The initial project Krownlab was tapped to take part in was the EcoHawks Engineering Research and Teaching Facility in Lawrence, Kansas. Another student group from KU, the EcoHawks research alternative energy sources for electric transportation. Studio 804 identified with Krownlab not only for the sleek aesthetic matching with their conceptual design, but for engineering our sliding door hardware inline with the same pen-to-production values that are a part of their curriculum. The installation was so successful, that we were asked to contribute to Studio 804's 2014 project, The Forum at Marvin Hall, a landmark addition to KU School of Architecture.
Throughout both LEED Platinum facilities, our Oden sliding hardware caps numerous openings and movable wall panels. Oden provides stylish design continuity, as well as lending functionality to cooperative work spaces. How does it feel to be part of two projects designed and built by an organization that shares our ideals and houses like-minded teams of innovators? We're ecstatic and can't wait to see where the future takes Studio 804.
